Health Benefits of Eating Fish

Rich in calcium and phosphorus, fish is a great source of minerals, such as iron, zinc, iodine, magnesium, and potassium. The NHS recommends eating fish at least twice a week as part of a healthy diet. Fish is packed with protein, vitamins, and nutrients that can lower blood pressure and help reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke.

Fish is a low-fat high quality protein filled with omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins such as D and B2 (riboflavin) providing significant health benefits. The body needs omega-3 fats, but cannot produce them on its own. It’s therefore essential that you get these fats through your diet thereby lowering triglycerides, a type of unhealthy cholesterol. Studies have found too that consuming omega-3s can help decrease blood pressure by several points, helping reduce your risk of heart disease.

Salmon is highly versatile and is one of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acid. Mackerel is rich in healthy fats, protein and selenium, which is important for a healthy immune system and thyroid function. Cod offers vitamins C, E, D, B1, B5, magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron and zinc. Haddock is higher in vitamins A, B12 for for energy and nervous system support, B6, B3, proteins, 9 essential amino acids, phosphorus, and choline, but has no vitamin C. Haddock is a mild-tasting fish, making it ideal for use in a large number of different dishes.

According to one study, eating baked or broiled fish at least once a week reduces the loss of grey matter in your brain that occurs as we grow older. While more studies need to be done on the subject, eating fish regularly may also correlate to a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
